Guest post from Beyond Youth CEO, Emma Morris:
Things have been moving at a frantic pace at Beyond Youth since we closed our investment round, so I thought I’d take 5 mins to document some of the latest happenings.
Firstly, and most excitingly, His Honour Martin Stephens QC has joined our Board as a Non-executive Director. He is a recently retired Old Bailey Judge and now sits as a member of the Parole Board. We’re delighted and honoured to have such a distinguished and influential person join the team. Martin joins our Chairman Keith Brown, who has an extensive background in finance and is now involved with a number of charitable organisation and Sahira Khwaja, Partner at international law firm Hogan Lovells where she specialises in Intellectual Property. Sahira joined the Board in April. They have been invaluable in offering guidance and support as we continue to fulfill our ambitious plans for expansion. Together we envisage an exciting future delivering significant social impact.
Meanwhile, the HMP/YOI Portland franchise continues to deliver impressive results with groups now booked until the end of September. Key stats so far are:
100% attendance and completion
98% report an increase in self confidence
96% say they feel more hopeful about the future
92% say they feel more able to control their anger
6 peer mentors have been trained and are actively involved supporting the facilitators and prisoners. One is acting as a mentor on the induction unit to help inform lads about the programme when they first arrive at the prison.
Our focus for the next month is to work with Dorchester Prison and The Verne to secure our first franchise cluster. Expect more news soon! A big thank you for now to all the team for their continued amazing work and to everyone who’s helped us along the way.
